Good Employer Matrix illustrations

The Good Employer Matrix — or GEM — is a tool designed to promote equitable employment practices, with a specific focus on improving outcomes for Māori and Pasifika. This was developed by The Southern Initiative (TSI), a social innovation hub within Auckland Council, and the Uptempo project.
The way the tool had been presented had been very research heavy so I was brought in to create a set of illustrations to explain the GEM to employers in a more simple and accessible way.

My mahi involved studying the research, then developing a storyboard, writing the script for the presentation and illustrating a series of images. Rather than just explaining what the GEM was, and how to use it, I focused on the reasons why it was important to close the pay gaps and help progress Māori and Pasifika in the workplace, and the ways we all benefit from doing so. I centred the presentation on the vision of a resilient workforce and thriving communities, and values of equity and diversity.

The project used the Pacific navigation framework of Hautū Waka, and I was asked to create images that had an unapologetically Māori and Pasifika flavour. I chose a style of illustration that resembled lino printing, and siapo printing. I compiled the illustrations into a powerpoint where the images were animated so that elements of the drawings appeared as the presentation was delivered.
